Two major Australian banks may merge

St George Bank Limited and Westpac Banking Corporation are in negotiations about a potential merger between the two banks. On Friday, Westpac approached St George after the close of business to discuss the possibility of a merger to strengthen both businesses' positions in the face of a changing financial climate.
