Monday June 15, 2009
Scammers have stepped up their attempts to gain access to bank accounts with a surge in the number of fake emails and SMS alerts being sent to Commonwealth Bank customers. The Commonwealth Bank has issued warnings to its customers informing them of the latest round of emails and SMS alerts that ask to confirm a banks customers account details.
The Commonwealth Bank released a statement that outlined the rise in telephone 'vishing' and SMS 'smishing'. These terms refer to the act of an individual being contacted directly via phone or SMS which aims to determine a person's banking details and information, similar to ';phishing' whereby fake emails are sent trying to learn the same sort of personal banking information such as bank account numbers, account names, financial amounts, credit card details and passwords that will be used to gain access to customer accounts.
Commonwealth Bank customers are encouraged to contact the bank if they do receive any emails, phone calls or SMS alerts requesting their banking details and should not reply for their own privacy protection.
It is important for all banks customers to note that banks will not usually contact their customer to find out personal information, and will not ask for pin numbers or similar access codes.
