ANZ Bank named global leader on green index

ANZ Bank has been named the most sustainable bank globally for the third consecutive year in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for 2009, a title rewarding the banks global leadership in corporate responsibility. The index measures various banks practices including brand management, corporate governance, customer relations, risk management, human resources, and corporate community investment. Besides these important business factors, the index will assess a banks dedication to certain environmental factors, namely environmental performance and climate change mitigation.

ANZ Bank recorded well above average assessment scores, with the global banks average being 51 per cent while ANZ Bank's was at a massive 90 per cent. According to previous year's results, ANZ Bank has consistently improved its assessment scores over recent years to reach this almost perfect result.

ANZ Chief Executive Officer Mike Smith said: "This assessment recognises that we have maintained and strengthened our focus on responsible business practices during a period of global economic instability.

"Our new global Code of Conduct and Ethics, brand strategy, programs to create a risk-aware culture across the organisation and support for customers facing financial hardship were highly rated by the DJSI as clear evidence that we are embedding responsible practices into everything we do."

Some examples of ANZ Bank's corporate responsibility measures include:

  • Targets to reduce use of electricity, water and paper, reduction targets of greenhouse gas emissions, and the overall amount of landfill waste
  • Financing several socially and environmentally sensitive industries
  • Involvement in community volunteering, indigenous communities and improving Australia's adult financial literacy levels
